We recently visited the lovely Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. These gardens have quite a history and an impressive story. Pim and Jennie Butchart bought this land for its lime deposits. Pim developed a quarry and built a cement plant on this inlet on Vancouver Island. Cement was in high demand. Jennie was the company’s chemist. When the lime deposits became exhausted it was Jennie who had a vision of developing this depleted land into something beautiful.
By horse and carriage from neighboring farms she had top soil brought in to line the quarry pits. They worked as a team to develop this land into marvelous gardens and through the years the heirs have continued the work of keeping this a place of beauty for all to visit. That is a gift to generations.
This is just one of the many walkways at the gardens. At the time of our visit the summer flowers and trees were looking lovely. This is just a wonderful place to visit and see how a legacy can benefit generations.
"We must begin thinking like a river if we are to leave a legacy of beauty and life for future generations.”
