Read MoreMuch is written about the importance of bees to our planet and for good reason since about a third of what we eat requires bee pollination. "Fruits and seeds descended from insect pollination are the prime food source of about 1/4 of all birds, and of mammals from voles to grizzly bears. Honey production alone in the US is said to be valued at about $150 million." The Value of Bees,-Xerces Society, University of Minnesota.
"The value of pollination by bees is estimated around $16 billion in the US alone. We would be unable to enjoy most of our favorite fruits, vegetables, or nuts without these pollinators. Bees also pollinate crops such as clover and alfalfa that cattle feed on, making bees important to our production and consumption of meat and dairy." - Beespotter
This year I have noticed more bees. Whether the population is stabilizing or there is just more awareness on my part, I do not know. When spotted, thoughts of their importance come to mind, and it is fun to observe a pollinator in action. This image was taken at Staunton State Park. This bee was enjoying the pollen on a blanket flower that decorated the trails. I am grateful for the people working to maintain the health of this highly important pollinator and to all the bee keepers as well.
