It seems appropriate to complete the week with another post on food. One of my favorite fruits of summer and the American food for 4th of July, the watermelon is in season. There is not much that exceeds the simple pleasure of a delicious, juicy watermelon. To me it is a food that is comforting because it reminds me of the innocent times of youth. Does anyone else remember being sent outside with a slice of watermelon only to use the hose for rinsing so as not to miss any playtime? Those were easy times.
I had been reluctant to buy one this season until it was at least from a neighboring state. I pretended I knew what to do when I chose it -thump and listen. I made eye contact with another person, and we both smiled at our novice actions. So when I cut into it, I was excited to find that it was truly delicious and just perfect for eating. I am so grateful for the simple pleasures of a juicy watermelon and the excuse to get messy.
“When one has tasted watermelon he knows what the angels eat”
Mark Twain
Peace.
